The naturally occurring phenomenon is created when up to 200 billion gallons of water is forced through the narrow ocean passageway each day to form one of the fastest tidal currents in the world. At its strongest, Skookumchuck currents can reach 30 km/hr (16 knots) and vary as much as 3 metres (9 ft) on either side. This is rivalled only by Vancouver Island’s Nakwakto Rapids, and Norway’s Saltstraumen. You’re truly experiencing one of the great natural wonders of the world.
